Know That I Am the Lord

It is clear in both the Old and New Testaments that God wants to be known. When our heart beats with His with an intense desire to know Him, what a beautiful combination it is. Here are a few morsels to contemplate in your journey of discovery.

“Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.”1 In 1961, A.W Tozer published his classic book, The Knowledge of the Holy in response to what he observed as a “loss of the concept of majesty”. He wrote, “The low view of God entertained almost universally among Christians is the cause of a hundred lesser evils everywhere among us...With our loss of majesty has come the further loss of religious awe and consciousness of the divine Presence.” He proposed that, “There is scarcely an error in doctrine or a failure in [application] that cannot be traced finally to imperfect and ignoble thoughts about God”, and “The man who comes into a right belief about God is relieved of ten thousand temporal problems”, Therefore, “The heaviest obligation lying upon the Christian Church today is to purify and elevate her concept of God”.2 "To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him? To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see... 3 “Take a good look at God’s wonders, they’ll take your breath away.”4 “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse above proclaims his handiwork.”5 “Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you lift up your voice to the cloud, that a flood of waters may cover you? Can you send forth lightnings that they may go and say to you, ‘Here we are’”?6 The answers are obvious, but God has “measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span. He brings out their hosts by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing.”7 I wish I could describe Him to you, but “were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written”.8 Do you know Him? He wants to know you! I trust you have experienced him and known Him and with Job you may say, “I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eyes see you”.9 Compiled by Clifford Schrock 1Isaiah 42:5,8 2vii, 1,2,4 3Isaiah 40:18, 25-26 4Psalm 66:5 The Message 5Psalm 19:1 6Job 38:31-35 (excerpts) 7Isaiah 40:12, 26 8John 21:25 9Job 42:5
